QUESTION
What is the best Treatment to use on lambs that halve developed pnuemonia in the lambing pen and have a temprange from 103-104, and have a raspy cough or respiration.

ANSWER

Treatment of any disease depends on what the cause is.Most respiratory problems a re a combination of enviromental problems plus bacteria. Make sure the ventilation is adequate , reduce ammonia , moisture and drafts at the level of the lambs. If its bacterial and many of the ewes are snotty nosed put them on a sulfa drug or an antibiotic in the feed for two weeks before lambing and through the nursing period. Individual treatments depend on age and the bacteria involved. Penicillin , naxel, tribrissen are all usefull at the proper dosage and if given for the proper length of time. Work with your veterinarian to set up a system. RD ScogginsDVM
