QUESTION
Dear,

I'm setting up a small poultry farm in Hopkins Park, IL (near Kankakee), I would like to know the size of shed required to keep 10,000 spent hen (discarded layers). I plan to kill the chicken for sale in the city.

Please include information on heating the coop during winter.

If any book is available for reading up on setting-up a poultry farm please kindly recommend.

Sincerely

Ray Duro 810 W Grace Street Apt 2407 Chicago, IL 60613

ANSWER

Mr. Duro:

You probably need a building that has about 20,000 sq. feet of floor space. You should contact Stromberg's Chicks Unlimited to get brooding, feeding supplies (800-720-1134). Request a catalog. Soft pine wood shaving is the best for litter, although ground corn cobs will also work.
