QUESTION
What is the recommended pasture mix for horses (that does not include tall fescue) used in Illinois? Can you suggest a retailer near Mount Vernon?
ANSWER
Some options for southern Illinois would include: Kentucky bluegrass 15 lbs. Kentucky bluegrass 15 lbs. + white clover 0.5 to 1 lb. Alfalfa 8-10 lbs. + Orchardgrass 4-6 lbs. Alfalfa 4-5 lbs. + Red clover 4 lbs. + Orchardgrass 4-6 lbs. Red clover 6-8 lbs. + Orchardgrass 4-6 lbs. Annual lespedeza 15 lbs. + Orchardgrass 4-6 lbs. Orchardgrass 10-15 lbs. The above rates are in pounds of pure live seed per acre. I did not include timothy since it is best adapted to the northern half of Illinois.
I would suggest contact your local Extension office for a list of dealers near Mt. Vernon. That phone number is 618-242-0780
