QUESTION
We have a two year old mammoth jack who breeds jennets. When we bring a mare in heat to him, he gets very excited, does on the right things, even mounts the mare but does not have his penis out. What is going on? How can we help? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.
ANSWER
The behavior this jack is demonstrating is not unusual, particularly for a young jack. He basically just needs more time and patience. Not any real tricks that work, just lots of positive reinforcement! My best success with these guys involves older, totally in lust mares that tolerate all sorts of abuse by overly enthusiastic jacks. As with lots of young stallions, you sometimes have to let them get away with more than you would with an older stallion.
