QUESTION
I need to dispose of horse manure. Where can I get information on recycling(selling or donating) in Northwestern area of IL? Thanks for the assistance

ANSWER

An Illinois Manure Share website is in the works, but not up and running at this time. The website will link people with available manure to those that have a need for manure.

Until this website is available, I would suggest contacting local nurseries, greenhouses, landscaping businesses, etc to see if they have any use for your manure. Additionally, some of the city park departments may be interested in manure as fertilizer.

If your manure has not been composted you might want to consider it. Composted manure is often times more appealing to non-horse people as it does not have the smell of manure. Additionally, it is actually a more stable nitrogen source after composting. Another huge benefit is that composting reduces the amount of waste by half.

Here are a couple of good composting websites Guide to Composting Horse Manure and Horse Owner's Guide to Composting

Good Luck!!!
