QUESTION
Our mare seems to get nervous on days that she is not given a certain excellent quality orchard grass. Could there be nutrients in this hay that are not present in the timothy hay that we feed that could make a noticable difference in her on a daily basis?

ANSWER

The nutrient profiles of your timothy and orchard grass hays may be very similar or different depending on the stage of maturity at which the respective forages were harvested, the harvesting conditions such as rainy versus dry weather, soil fertility and pH, etc. Your perception of your mare's behavior changes may or may not be related to forage differences. If you wish to determine the nutrient profiles of your timothy and orchard grass hays, then you can send representative samples of each using core samples from the center of the bales to any number of laboratories certified by the National Forage Testing Association. Information about properly acquiring and shipping forage samples for testing, available tests, and list of certified labs can be found on the following web site: Forage Testing Labs
