QUESTION
I milk 60 cows & have 30 with udder rot.It starts out abouit the size of a quarter then grows & eats away an area of the udder. Its mainly underneath but is also on the side too.Any idea what i can do to stop it?Ive tried iodine & eprinex and it continues to eat away. Thanks Mike

ANSWER

Sounds like you have herpes mamillitis virus in your herd. We usually see this only in heifers with udder edema, but cow can get it too if there are a lot of cows with active lesions. Since it is a virus, there is not much to do once a lesion starts. Nolvasan cream does have some virucidal activity, but don't hold your breath for a miracle cure.

Clean udders and minimizing udder edema are two preventative measures. When the udders are dirty, any minor trauma that causes udder skin irritation, can lead the the beginning of a lesion. Once the lesion starts, they can spread fairly rapidly.
