Newsletter

It has been a while since our last dairy newsletter. Mike Hutjens has been retired for 2 ½ years from the University of Illinois, Urbana. Dr. Phil Cardoso took the leadership role as the Dairy Specialist in the Department of Animal Sciences in the fall of 2012. You can find more information about his program and planned activities at http://dairyfocus.illinois.edu/. Phil earned his doctorate degree from the University of Illinois under Dr. Jim Drackley and has a DVM degree from Brazil.

Three items to update you on along with new publications listed below.

  1. A new dairy class will be offered for one credit titled “Ration balancing and building” class using the Spartan III dairy model. The five week class begins in September and is open for enrollment at http://online.ansci.illinois.edu/.
  2. We are also offering a one day hands-on training class at the Hoard’s Dairyman Farm at Fort Atkinson, WI on Oct 5th (during Expo week). This timing allows people to attend the largest dairy show and exhibition in North America while taking this class. Due to space, we must limit class size to 20 enrollees. You do not have to enroll in the ration balancing class to take the one day lab. More details can be found at http://go.Illinois.edu/dairylab.
  3. Dr. Dick Wallace will be offering his advanced dairy reproduction class for two credits starting in September. Enrollment is open and is a ten week class ending in November. More details can be found at http://online.ansci.illinois.edu/.
